About FolioTL

Shinmai Maō no Testament (The Testament of Sister New Devil) is the series this site was originally built for. Its first volumes have been available in English for a long time through fan communities, and we're grateful to everyone who made that possible. They are the reason many of us got to read the story at all.

Why another translation?

A friend of ours, Z4gan_, is a big fan of the series and loves re-reading it. With today's AI tools, he wondered if he could make his own version that reads like a published novel, and he's been working on it ever since: he has finished Volume 3, he's now working on Volume 4, and he translates the illustrations too. He uses AI as part of his process, followed by his own editing. We know AI in translation is a touchy subject, so we'd rather tell you upfront.

When we tried his version, we genuinely enjoyed it, and we wanted to share that excitement with the Shinmai Maō community. That's how FolioTL came about: a more polished, readable edition of the series, offered alongside the other versions out there, not instead of them. The plan is to continue through Volume 7. After that, we'll see. Reading is a matter of taste: if you like our version, wonderful, and if you prefer another, that's perfectly fine. There's room for more than one.

Beyond one series

FolioTL was built for the Shinmai Maō series, and that's still its focus. As the site came together, we realized the same approach could work for other novels we love. We may add more titles over time, but nothing is confirmed.

Any new title would follow the same process: AI tools help with the first draft, and a person edits it by hand. AI makes this hobby possible in our spare time, but it doesn't replace the editing, and that part still takes time. Releases will be irregular, and we'd rather publish fewer chapters done well than many done fast.

Support the originals

FolioTL is a non-commercial fan project and is not affiliated with the authors or publishers. If you enjoy a series, please support the official releases whenever they're available. If we find that a title receives an official English release, we'll take our version down. You can read more in our DMCA & Copyright Policy.

If you'd like to help us keep going, you can support us on Ko-fi. And if you have a suggestion, spot a typo, or find a broken page, let us know.

Thanks for reading.
